MYSTYC BLADE: Pyramids And Mystery

Wormholedeath Records - Digital Single
"Pyramids And Mystery" is taken from their album "The Master Is Inside" (out now).
This track transports the listener to the land of the Pharaohs, where the tombs of ancient Egypt conceal secrets of power, peril, and ancient curses. It's inspired by Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and the infamous legend of the Pharaoh's Curse. It has a cinematic atmosphere, and is almost like a mythological adventure from a movie. It's actually a little strange somehow, and hardly a straight heavy metal anthem that you can bang your head to. It's more like "What did I just listen to?".
But now that I listen again, it might actually not be so bad after all. The intro is a little too long, but after that it's a melodic heavy metal song. This track is 7 and a half minutes long.

Royale Lynn: Battleground

Epitaph Records - Digital Single
Nashville-based artist Royale Lynn is said to play active rock, which is not always the same as action rock as I thought. We get a genre-bending sound where she is making a crossover of country, hard rock and modern pop, which I think is something that nobody else have been crazy enough to do. But this small-town girl is obviously brave enough to do it. To me this sounds mainly like a modern pop song, which I think sucks. But thanks to those metal guitars here and there, there's at least some parts of this song that is o.k. I would not recomend it for metal fans though.

AVULSED: Phoenix Cryptobiosis

Xtreem Music on March 4 - CD, LP, Cassette, Digital
Spanish death metal veterans AVULSED return with a new full-length album. And this is the first time in over a decade that they release a full album. The band, which was formed back in 1991, has never been done though. They have continued to play and become one of the most respected extreme metal bands from Spain. 7 albums, several EPs and demos is what they has released through the years.
In June 2024, AVULSED experienced the biggest lineup change of its long career, seeing 3 of its members leave at the same time due to their lack of interest in continuing to play in the band. But within just 5 days they found new members: Alejandro Lobo (KRUEGER, DISSONATH, ex-GILLMAN) on guitars and Alex Nihil (SEPULCRATION, PARSEC, UMBRAETERNUM...) on bass. Victor Dws (EDERNITY, NEUROMANCER) joined them a couple of months later.
Now they are back, and seems to be stronger and better than ever before. It's heavy and brutal, and have all the right ingredients for a good death metal album. This is a must-have record, and there's not much more to say about that.

ARCHITECTS: Everything Ends

Epitaph Records - Digital Single
The punks use to discuss what's punk and not. Maybe there should be the same kind of discussion when it comes to metal? Because here's an example of what I would say is not metal. Just because you have heavy guitars doesn't mean that it's suddenly metal. And especially not when everything else sounds like pop music.
This Brighton band have a very modern sound, and I would guess that the kids like it more than an old fart like me.
The song is taken from their new album, "The Sky, The Earth & All Between", which is out now.

MOLOSSER CRUDE: Swallow The Sun

Evil Ear on Feb. 28 - Digital Single
"Swallow The Sun" is the second single leading up to Swedish power duo MOLOSSER CRUDE's debut album, which will be released in May. This little song gives us "relentless riffs lay down a darkly psychedelic groove with raw, explosive choruses and cool vocals on a solid foundation of bluesy stoner rock sensibilities", as the press release says. They merge the hypnotic drones of bluesy 60s psychedelia and the jazz-based swing of that era's drumming and singing with the darkness, harsher rhythms and merciless drive of later decades, long past the summer of love. We call it bluesy stoner rock to make it easier. It's a little like if Jimi Hendrix would still have been alive and decided to team up with some desert rockers. Heavy and riff based, as well as old school and modern at the same time. In other words nice.

MANTRIC MOMENTUM: Alienized

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, Digital
This is a melodic metal band centered around vocalist Terje Harøy (PYRAMAZE) and multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Christer Harøy (DIVIDED MULTITUDE, CROSSNAIL). "Alienized" is their second album, where we get a mix of heavy riffs, twin guitars, melodic vocals and massive choruses. It's epic and bombastic. We are offered a very professional performance, and it actually doesn't sound that bad at all. Fact is that they have a very strong and good material here. But what else I should say about this is unknown to me. You should give them a try though, in case you didn't get that.

GINGER EVIL: The Way It Burns

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, Digital
GINGER EVIL is a rock band from Finland, who began as MOONSHINE INC. in 2005. That didn't last long though, and the band was put on ice after a while. But many years later they wanted to do something with those old songs, and GINGER EVIL was born. And now their debut album is here, where we get everything from FLEETWOOD MAC to FOO FIGHTERS they say.
It's catchy and melodic, and hardly the hardest band, yet they are rocking. That's the best description I can give you. And as they take inspiration from all eras of rock, their sound and music is timeless. I would gues that you could put them in the classic rock genre? Most of these songs sounds good anyway.

CRAZY LIXX: Thrill Of The Bite

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - LP, CD, Digital
This Swedish band has already been around for more than 20 years, and it sounds like they have gone back to their roots on this new album, which have more of the sleaze rock that they played in their early days as a band. But there's also lots of 80s and 90s hard rock and heavy metal, which isn't any new ingredients either. It's possibly a little heavier and more riff-driven though, but the melodic choruses are still there, and in the end it's a catchy kind of hard rock thet we get here.
This is a very good album, so if you like American hard rock from the 80s, then you should really check this out.

RISE OF TYRANTS: The Chronicles Of Cardinal Pablo Mendoza

Brutal Records on Feb. 28 - CD, Digital
This is an Italian death metal band, and except for this new studio album, their previous works has been re-released as well - "Trauma" (2014) on January 10 and "Abnormality in Structure" (2019) on February 7.
That they are signed to a label called Brutal Records is quite fitting, because this is a brutal, fast and raw force which plows forward and crushes without any mercy whatsoever. Yet they also succeed to create something called music, so it's absolutely worth listening to.
It's said that they have taken everything up to the next level this time, and that their previous records can now be seen as just a warm-up. The energy is sharper, darker and meaner. The concept on this album is centered around Cardinal Pablo Mendoza, an evil priest who deceives the weakest for perverse purposes. The lyrics talk about abuses, violence and injustices with an ironic and sarcastic tone.

LORD SONNY THE UNIFIER: You Were Born To Save Your Life

Interstellar Smoke Records - LP, Digital
LORD SONNY THE UNIFIER has released a few records now, and as usual I don't really know what to think about this, but "Wanna Bet Your Life" have a good chorus at least, and is without a doubt the strongest song here. Most of the other songs just goes in and out without any deeper impression. It's laidback and alternative, and actually not so easy to describe. They call the music post punk/psych rock though. And this album is a concept album written from the perspective of a time traveler or an observer navigating the chaotic and surreal landscape of a post-COVID world. And it's said that they have pushed their signature sound further, incorporating elements of psych rock, psychobilly, and even goth. I would say that it's a mix of the 60s/70s sound and a modern production, which makes it sound timeless.
LORD SONNY THE UNIFIER are based in Brooklyn, and they have succeeded to find their own sound anyway.

IRON JAW: Cursed

NoLifeTilMetal Records on Feb. 28 - CD, LP, Digital
I think of good old JUDAS PRIEST when I listen to this. And that's not bad to be compared with them of course. Now IRON JAW might not have as excellent songs as the old legends, and might not sound exactly like them, but it sure ain't bad. So this is absolutely worth checking out.
IRON JAW is based in Dallas, and is part of the "new wave of traditional heavy metal" scene. "Cursed" is their second album. They formed in 2016 and released their debut album, "Chain Of Command", in 2020.
It's said that the band takes their sound to new heights with this album, combining incredible riffs, fire vocals, and an unstoppable rhythm section. But I think you already know what good old heavy metal sounds like?

HEAVEN'S REIGN: Northern Lights

Pride & Joy Music on Feb. 28 - CD
HEAVEN'S REIGN is a melodic rock band from the UK, which features 3 founding members of ROLLIN THUNDER (Rik Cayton, Ian Lynan, Ste Birch), as well as members of FASTER THAN BULLS (Ricky Moss) and SKETCHER/DEEP CELLAR (Gaz Birch). They are deeply inspired by the golden era of rock n roll, which I guess in this case is the 70s and 80s (that's what it sounds like to me anyway).
"Northern Lights" is their debut album. And even if they call this melodic rock, it doesn't really sound like AOR, but more like melodic hard rock according to me. They give us 10 tracks, and there's many good moments here, so this could be worth listening to if you like classic hard rock like it was done in the old days.

CROWN OF MADNESS: Memories Fragmented

Transcending Obscurity Records on Feb. 28 - LP, CD, Cassette, Digital
This is the full-length debut from these Canadian dissonant death metallers. They have previously released a slew of short-form releases, where they have improved their sound with each release.
This is dark and heavy, but at the same time also brutal and raw, while also emotive and melodic. So there's many different flavours here, but most of all a demanding record to listen to as there's so much going on, and on top of that this is not really my kind of music. But if you think this could be of interest, then give them a try.

CHRISTIAN MISTRESS: Children Of The Earth

Cruz Del Sur Music on Feb. 28 - CD, LP, Digital
"Children Of The Earth" is the first new album in over 10 years from this North American traditional heavy metal band. And it's a energetic and very guitar based material that we get, which is topped with female vocals of high class. It's also very old school and not so clean, which is a sound that I like. The songs are excellent and very easy to like.
This is the kind of band that should be more popular then I think they are. But now that I have told you about them, you will listen and spread the word about them, o.k.? Good!
cruzdelsurmusic.com | christianmistress.bandcamp.com

BRONCO: Bronco

Magnetic Eye Records on Feb. 28 - CD, LP
North Carolina-based trio BRONCO release their self-titled debut album, which is deeply steeped in doom metal and Southern sludge. Their sound is obstinate, rough and unpolished. The songs are permeated with a self-confidence that is in itself a sign of experience. And the band didn't appear out of nowhere, but rose from the ashes of TOKE after guitarist Tim Bryan suffered a tragic motorcycle accident in 2021. Out of respect for his incapacitated band mate, vocalist and bass player Bronco, along with drummer JP, decided to continue with a newly formed trio. Joined by guitarist Vic, they picked Bronco's artist alias for their name. And BRONCO pick up where TOKE left off, but add some new elements.
This is really heavy and riff-based, but also very cool stuff. They have a dirty but powerful sound. Some songs are between 6-8 minutes, while others are around 4-5 minutes. I'm pretty sure that people who like it heavy will love this. So give them a try.

MERCILESS: Behind The Realms Of The Dark

Darkness Shall Rise Productions on Feb. 27 - LP, CD, Cassette
The first album with Swedish death/thrash metal band MERCILESS, "The Awakening", was released in 1990. It also happened to become the very first release on Euronymous' (MAYHEM) then newly founded infamous label Deathlike Silence Productions. But before that the band recoded 2 demos, "Behind The Black Door" (1987) and "Realm Of The Dark" (1988), and those demos is what we get on this collection.
What we get here is 8 tracks in less than half an hour. They were still a very young band here, and the sound is raw and the music very energetic. But they had already found a sound and were very good at what they were doing. I like what I hear, and so should you if you like true old school death/thrash from the early days.
MERCILESS have continued to release new recordings during the years. The latest studio album, which was self-titled, was released in 2002. After that they has released 2 live recordings, "Live Obsession" (2-DVD, 2004) and "Live In Santiago" (live album, 2022).

GRAVE INFESTATION: Carnage Gathers

Invictus Productions/Dark Descent Records on Feb. 28 - CD, Digital (LP later)
Nearly 3 years after their full-length debut, "Persecution Of The Living", was released, GRAVE INFESTATION return with a new album. It's said that the fast parts are faster, the slow parts are slower and everything is just plain nastier. We talk about violent, unrelenting death metal here, influenced by bands like AUTOPSY, GRAVE, NIHILIST, REPULSION, and ABHORRENCE.
This is good, but I get the feeling that it should have been even better than it actually is. It might just be me who is stupid, because after all it kicks ass and sounds exactly like it should. So let's just say that if you like old school meat and potato death metal without any bullshit, then you should give this album a try.

Francesco Marras: Out Of The Fire

Hell Tour Productions - CD, Digital
Italian musician Francesco Marras has since 2020 played guitar in British NWOBHM band TYGERS OF PAN TANG, and is also the founder of the Italian metal band SCREAMING SHADOWS. Once in a while he also make a solo album.
Francesco sing on 6 of the songs here, and play all guitars and bass. But there's also several guests on vocals, like David Readman (PINK CREAM 69), Iacopo Meille (TYGERS OF PAN TANG), Gianni Pontillo (VICTORY) and Daniele Ledda (TWILIGHT ZONE). Drums are played by Pavel Ljubicic from Bosnia, and keyboards are played by Maeco Cossu, while Marco Garrucciu play bouzouki.
The music that we get is melodic hard rock/heavy metal in the old tradition, yet with a modern sound and production. These 10 tracks are really good stuff, so there's nothing to complain about. But it's not like I have that much else to say either. You should really check this out anyway, because I'm pretty sure that you won't be dissapointed.
The album will be followed by a short tour in Germany in the end of March.

FAXIN: The Rich And The Poor

SODEH Records - Digital Single
What we get here is a catchy and energetic punk rock anthem. I really like this and want more. This is a must to listen to if you like punk.
"The Rich And The Poor" take up the old subject class against class and the indifference of wealth and the struggle of the working class. So if you're looking for a song against the rich and the skewed distribution of assets, then this is it.
The story of FAXIN traces back to the 90s, but this is actually the first time I have heard about them. Their songs are built on legends like RAMONES and SOCIAL DISTORTION, but they have obviously added more rawness and energy.

DIRKSCHNEIDER: Balls To The Wall Reloaded

Reigning Phoenix Music on Feb 28 - CD, LP, Digital
Udo Dirkschneider   Mille of Kreator   Danko Jones
O.k., "Balls To The Wall" is a classic album with German heavy metal band ACCEPT, originally released in December 1983 in Europe and January 1984 in North America, where we can find great songs like the title track, "London Leatherboys", "Head Over Heels", "Love Child" and maybe the best ballad they ever done "Winter Dreams".
Now their former frontman, Udo Dirkschneider, has teamed up with some other hard rock and heavy metal vocalists for a 40th anniversary re-recording of the entire album, and for some reason it's released about 1 year too late. Among the people that Udo is doing duets with are Joakim Brodén (SABATON), Biff Byford (SAXON), Mille Petrozza (KREATOR), Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN), Danko Jones (DANKO JONES), Dee Snider (TWISTED SISTER), Doro Pesch (DORO) etc.
This recording sounds a little different from the original album, as there's many other voices. But the sound in general is a little different too. Not so surprising though as it has passed 40 years. But there's no doubt that this is still a milestone in ACCEPT's long career, and this new recording works very good too. So you check this out of course.
The album has what I would call some macho songs, but there's also what could be called love songs. Fact is that at this time a woman called Deaffy (real name Haby Hauke, manager and later guitarist Wolf Hoffman's wife) wrote the lyrics, while the band concentrated on the music. And the lyrics on this album might not always be so macho as it might seems. If you can trust Wikipedia, most songs is about politics, sexuality and human relationships.
To continue the anniversary, DIRKSCHNEIDER are going on a long European tour between February 25 to April 12. They will also play at Wacken Open Air in the summer, and then go on a UK/Ireland tour with SAXON in November.

BRAINSTORM: Plague Of Rats

Reigning Phoenix Music on Feb. 28 - CD, LP, Digital
With "Plague Of Rats", German power metal band BRAINSTORM revives the Indian themes first presented on "Soul Temptation" (2003). It's also said that this record marks a return to their roots.
BRAINSTORM are vetarans in the power metal scene. They formed in 1989, and released their first album in 1997. And what you can expect to hear here is powerful riffs, rousing melodies and gripping choruses with modern influences and a fresh aggression. This is a band who have already proved what they are capable of many years ago. So what they prove with this new album is that they still got it and still knows how to make great songs. Because this is a very good album with a really strong material. German steel like it was meant to be, you could say.

W.A.S.P.: Bonus Tracks & B-Sides

Madfish Music - Digital Album
"Bonus Tracks & B-Sides" is taken from the box set "The 7 Savage", and it's exactly what the title says. In other words a treasure trove for die-hard fans, offering a glimpse into the unpolished, experimental, and daring side of W.A.S.P. This collection compiles rare tracks, dynamic covers and deep cuts that showcase the band's versatility and passion for their craft. Or a chance to get out of he box and do something different in some cases.
The highlights for me are tracks like "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" "Show No Mercy", "Paint It Black" (ROLLING STONES), "Mississippi Queen" (MOUNTAIN) and "Locomotive Breath" (JETHRO TULL). But it was interesting to hear the rest of the tracks here too, as most of them were new to me. And the best songs among those tracks are "Flesh And Fire" and "Phantoms In The Mirror".
The last track, "The Story Of Jonathan (Prologue To The Crimson Idol)" is described as a 16-minute opus that provides a deeper dive into the conceptual world of "The Crimson Idol". But it's actually not much of an opus, as it's just a guy talking and an acoustic guitar in the background. Totally useless to listen to! But that's the only bad card here.
The band continues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the self-titled debut album, and are touring in both North America and Europe this year.

Soren Andersen: Bad Weather (live)

Mighty Music - Digital Single
Ahead of the new live album announcement, Danish guitar legend Soren Andersen (Glenn Hughes, Dave Mustaine, Marco Mendoza etc) unleashed a track from the album as a single and first taste. This song is actually just a long guitar solo. So yes, it's instrumental, but catches the raw energy of a live performance pretty good. It also shows us that this guy can play guitar. I guess we can describe this as guitar hard rock for fans of guitar heroes like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and similar.
"Live in The Homeland" will be released next month. It will be his first live album under his own name.

L.A. WITCH: 777

Suicide Squeeze - Digital Single
Southern California ladies L.A. WITCH will release a new album, "DOGGOD", on April 4, and as you probably can figure out, "777" is a first taste of the album.
They gives us a underground rock sound that fuses retro psychedelia and fearless dark-wave. It sounds alternative, and emphasizes the band's ability to blend drive and dreaminess. And it really works in this case, because even if it's laidback it's actually good.
L.A. WITCH have also announced a run of upcoming spring North American tour dates with support from DAIISTAR and Choke Cherry.

WARBRINGER: The Sword And The Cross

Napalm Records - Digital Single
This is a really good thrash metal attack from the new album, "Wrath & Ruin", which will be released on March 14. It has all the right ingredients, and is also a good indication of what the new album will sound like. You just have to check it out! Simple as that and not much else to add.
"The Sword And The Cross" is the second single from the upcoming album. And the album will be followed by lots of touring in both North America and Europe.
WARBRINGER are actually so good that they should be a bigger name than they really are. But the new album might change that..

STRYKENINE: Open Your Eyes

Raw Street Noise on Feb. 21 - Digital Single
Rock quintet STRYKENINE are back with a new single, which they describe as a epic feelgood song drenched in 80s nostalgica and the band's own mix of powerful riffs and infectious melodies. It's a very melodic song, and yes it really sounds like something from the 80s. A pretty catchy song with a damn good chorus. This song should be a small hit. But I guess we are in the wrong decade for that. You listen to this anyway.

SCOWL: B.A.B.E.

Dead Oceans - Digital Single
SCOWL is a hardcore band from Santa Cruz, and they will release a new album, "Are We All Angels", on April 4. But this is not the usual hardcore/metal or hardcore/punk, but more like something alternative instead. They have the energy, but are also catchy, and blend harder parts with more melodic parts. Very interesting and fresh actually, but it might not fit every fan of hardcore. Why not give it a try anyway?
The title "B.A.B.E." is short for Burned At Both Ends, so it's not a sweet love song.
The album will be followed by a tour in the UK and Europe in May.

CORNERS OF SANCTUARY: Never Count Me Out

SODEH Records - Digital Single
Philly-based U.S. heavy metal band CORNERS OF SANCTUARY are back with another single. And it sounds surprisingly vital actually. They still have their unique sound, but have somehow succeeded to give it an extra push to the next level, and are suddenly not so boring anymore. I like what I hear.
The band was formed in 2011 by a passion for classic heavy metal. They have released several albums, EPs and singles through the years. It seems like this song is taken from their latest EP, "Forever Metal", which is out now. And if they have more songs like this on that EP, then it could be interesting.

REAL SICKIES: Triage

Stomp Records - Digital Single
REAL SICKIES hailing from Edmonton, Canada. They seamlessly blends elements of indie, punk and new-wave. A new album, "Under A Plastic Bag", will be released on March 14, and that's where this single comes from. And this is a raw and energetic punk rocker, with sharp and melodic hooks. What you could call an anthem. It's catchy and energetic and very easy to like for old and new punks. And I think it's not impossible that even some rockers will like this.
"Under A Plastic Bag" will be their fifth full-length album, and that could be interesting to hear, because this song was really good.

SAGOSTUND: Bara Vara Barn

Icons Creating Evil Art - Digital Single
Tired of being an adult? Do you miss the 70s, TV shows for children and progg music? Then this could be the cure you've been longing for. Because this northern Swedish band gives you progressive rock the old Swedish way (aka progg), and songs that fits both children and adults. All lyrics are in Swedish and based on fantasies and not growing up. And this is very good stuff, so I look forward to hear their debut album, "Leva I En Fantasi", which will be released on March 21.
Everybody who like music from the 70s should check this out.

LUPONERO: Pickup Artist

Icons Creating Evil Art - Digital Single
Alternative hard rock trio LUPONERO are back with a new single. This Finnish band blends classic rock influences with modern punk sensibilities to create their own unique soundscape. Their self-titled debut album will be released on March 21, and this song is a taste of that, where they mix their own special cocktail of hard rock, post punk and grunge. It's very catchy and energetic, and I would guess that many different kinds of people could like this, even fans of pop music actually. But it's most of all rocking, so it's definitely rock and not pop.
LUPONERO will do some European tour dates in March and April.

SEVENTH STATION: On Shoulders Of Giants

Layered Reality Productions on Feb. 21 - MCD, Digital EP
SEVENTH STATION is a international progressive metal band, and this is their third release, which is a wild ride with many different ingredients. The music is adventurous and bombastic like a opera. But then the idea here was to translate modern classical music into progressive metal. And therfor it sounds like it does - like a mixture of progressive metal, classical music and even tivoli music.
These people are very skilled and very good at what they are doing here. I'm pretty sure that fans of both progressive metal and rock will love these 5 tracks.

KING ZOG: Second Dawn

Hammerheart Records on Feb. 21 - CD, LP, Digital
Australian doom metallers KING ZOG released their debut album in 2017. Now they are back with album number 2, which is said to be bigger, heavier and doomier than its predecessor. And heavy it is, without a doubt, yet not slow but rather pretty catchy. I would also say that these 8 tracks are powerful. Absolutely not bad at all, and worth listening to if you like it heavy.
Most of the songs are around 4-6 minutes. 2 are really short though, just 1-2 minutes, while the last track is as long as 11 and a half minutes.

AIRFORCE: Acts Of Madness

ROAR on Feb. 21 - LP, CD, Digital
AIRFORCE is a London, UK based New Wave Of Heavy Metal band from the 1980s. Among the members are former IRON MAIDEN member Doug Sampson, and they are actually doing a cover of "Strange World" by his former band. This album has taken its time. They started to record in 2020, but then came a pandemic and then their producer and close friend Pete Franklin passed away, resulting in the loss of much of the material.
What we get here is a powerful and emotionally charged album, with a material that's ready for the big arenas. It sounds like one of those great albums from the 80s actually, so you would not want to miss this if you like that. Fantastic song after fantastic song without any weak moments.

VULTURES VENGEANCE: Dust Age

High Roller Records on Feb. 21 - CD, LP, Cassette, Digital
VULTURES VENGEANCE are an epic metal band in the same tradition as CIRITH UNGOL, MANILLA ROAD and BROCAS HELM. They formed in Rome, Italy in 2009. After 1 demo and 2 EPs, they released their full-lenght debut, "The Knightlore", in 2019. That is now followed by "Dust Age".
They play a powerful and melodic kind of heavy metal, and they do it pretty good. But there's actually not that many anthems here, which could have made the album even better. Now it could be that I think that way because I have heard so many other records. And people who doesn't listen to something like over 1000 releases a year will probably think that this is excellent. So don't be afarid of giving this album a listen if you like epic heavy metal, beacuse they are really not that bad.

MORAX hailing from Bergen, Norway and is the brainchild of Remi A. Nygård, who is handling all the instruments himself and writes all the songs. He has been playing in various bands and projects for quite some time, the most important being the thrash metal band INCULTER, which has been active for more than 10 years now. MORAX released a mini-album, "Rites And Curses", in October 2023, and now it's time for the full-length debut, "The Amulet".
With Remi originally coming out of the extreme metal scene, his influences for MORAX are quite different, with everything from 70s rock to thrash metal. He names MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND, early JUDAS PRIEST and BLACK SABBATH (mostly the Dio era) as his biggest inspiration. It's "a heavy metal album that explores many different corners of heavy metal, always with a kind of evil or dark edge", as Remi says.
Well, it sounds majestic (in lack of a better word) and really good anyway, no doubt about that. It has that old school feeling, so there's no modern stuff here but pure heavy metal as it was meant to be. I think lots of people will like this album, so you should really give it a try.
The CD version also features the whole mini-album as a bonus.

INDIAN NIGHTMARE: Banished Into Endless Chaos

High Roller Records on Feb. 21 - MCD, MLP, Cassette, Digital
5 years after their second LP, "By Ancient Force", Berlin-based "tribal metal punks" INDIAN NIGHTMARE are back with a new 3-track EP, that serve as a harbinger for the band's third studio album later in 2025.
The band found themselves without a frontman in 2021, but they have now found a new singer called Jaguars Claw (MORBYDA).
The first song, "Looking Into The Fire", is probably best described as speed metal, as it's an intense and energetic little bastard. It sounds really good. After that we get another fast high octane attack in the form of "Secret Path". Another song that I call speed metal, and still damn good. And the last track here is called "Lucifer", which begins a little heavier, but after about a minute it goes fast again. Another great song.
If these 3 songs says anything about the direction on the next album, then it sounds very promising.

CABALLERO: Caballero

Gates Of Hell Records on Feb. 21 - CD, LP, Cassette, Digital
This is a Finnish underground metal band, who blend old school metal with timeless power metal, something similar to the early stuff from JAG PANZER, JUDAS PRIEST and OMEN they say.
The origins of CABALLERO trace back to 2009, when vocalist/guitarist Aguirre and drummer Pizarro teamed up to play metal in the vein of BROCAS HELM, MANILLA ROAD and CIRITH UNGOL. That was unfortunately short-lived. Luckily Aguirre revived the band, and their self-titled full-length debut was recorded. And this record features both songs from 2009-2010 as well as material composed between 2020-2023.
What they play is a dark and obscure kind of heavy/power metal. They have succeeded to get a old school sound, and sometimes it's almost progressive, so it's not any cheap shit but a pretty ambitious material which is full of quality. And this is not bad at all, so you should really give this album a chance.
We get 7 tracks, and they are between 3:38 to 7 minutes.

CAGES: Better Mistakes

Cages/Through Love Rec. (Germany)/New Knee Rec. (USA)/Shove Rec. (Italy)/Fireflies Fall (France)/Slow Down Rec. (Finland)/Rufen Publishings (Japan)/Mevzu Rec. (Turkey) on Feb. 21 - 12" EP, Cassette, Digital
German hardcore band CAGES was founded by members of WE HAD A DEAL and some other bands, and "Better Mistakes" is their second record, where we get 6 songs. These guys doesn't seems to be influenced by the old school, but the stuff from the early 2000s, which I don't have a very good grasp of. But it seems like they want to combine catchy riffs with passionate vocals. And even if the lyrics are dark, the music remains melody-driven and almost optimistic - "Sad music for almost happy people" as it says on their Bandcamp page.
For playing hardcore, they are actually not that hard and fast. But it's not the extremely heavy kind either. Instead, I get the feeling that they are trying to be a little deeper and more emotional. It almost sounds poetic, in lack of a better description. It's good but not much else. I guess that I prefer the harder stuff from the 80s and 90s.

REMAIN UNTAMED: Pharmaceutical Madness

Headbangers Records - MCD, Digital EP
REMAIN UNTAMED is a Dutch crossover thrash band, and this record is a tribute to their late guitarist Hans Hostile, featuring 4 original tracks and a cover of his former band T.C.F., with guest appearances from his son and former bandmates.
The band was formed from the ashes of BRUTAL OBSCENITY in 2015. From the start the band made it clear what they stood for: fast, furious and relentless crossover thrash in the spirit of D.R.I., SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, ANTHRAX, S.O.D., EXCEL, EXODUS and SLAYER.
The energy is high and it sounds old school, almost like a old demo recording actually. What they are doing here is nothing unique of course, but these 5 songs are actually not so bad at all, so it's still worth a chance.
I would guess that this could fit both thrashers and fans of hardcore. Because as you probably already know, crossover is a mix of hardcore and thrash metal.

STINKY: Solace

M-Theory Audio on Feb. 21 - LP, CD, Digital
What this French band play is probably best described as melodic hardcore because of some guitar melodies here and there and some melodic vocals as well. But there's hard and heavy moments with harsh vocals too. And I prefer the hard moments before the melodic, which makes it sound too modern for an old man like me.
"Solace" comes 5 years after their previous full-length album, "Of Lost Things". Since last time, as much as 3 new members has joined the band: Max on bass, and Enzo and Clément on guitars. The album also features guest appearances from Lou Koller (SICK OF IT ALL) and Andrew Neufeld (COMEBACK KID).
This is a good album, but I guess it could have been even better without the most melodic parts.

VICIOUS NATURE: Shadowlands

Vicious Nature - MCD
British heavy metal band VICIOUS NATURE were formed in late 2012 from the ashes of MARSHALL LAW, CLOVEN HOF and CEREBRAL FIX. I'm not sure when this EP was released, but it's their latest record anyway.
What we get from these gentlemen is a energetic kind of heavy metal in the more powerful league. I can hear both old and new influences, as well as some progressive elements. And it all sounds very professional. They might not have any anthems here, but it sure ain't bad anyway. You should give them a try.
I don't really know what else I should say, so let the music speak for itself..

DRUGS OF FAITH: Asymmetrical

Selfmadegod Records on Feb. 21 - CD
It seems to be 10 years since these northern Virginia, USA grinders released a full-length album last time. But with "Asymmetrical" they are back with a new long player. But as it's grind n roll (as they call it) that we talk about here, it's actually not so long, as most songs are pretty short and intense - from 19 seconds to 3 minutes. They blend in both rock and hardcore in their grindcore, and it actually doesn't really sound as extreme as grindcore use to do. But I guess that's just good (for me at least), because it makes it more listenable. This is almost more like hardcore, and it's actually not so bad at all.
DRUGS OF FAITH have been around for more than 20 years and released several records through the years. So if you like this, then there's more to check out.

IMPURIST: Evolving Cortex

783punx on Feb. 28 - LP (with first EP as a bonus), MCD, Cassette
These UK death metallers really show us all how they think it's supposed to be done, and attack us with 3 really fast and brutal tracks. The band features former and current members of bands like GOREROTTED, EXTREME NOISE TERROR, HELLBASTARD, WINTERFYLLETH etc. And that might give you an idea about what this could sound like. Yes, it's noisey and really raw, but yet music and not chaos.
The first track, "Bubonic Ecstasy", is a really fast bastard, and I really like it. "Evolving Cortex" start slow, but soon gets faster. It might not be as fast as the first track, but it's just as good. And with the last song, "Teeth And Limbs", they continue as before, so it's also a good song.

NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS/BLOODFEAST RITUAL: You've Got Red On You

Self-released? on Feb. 21 - Digital Album
This split album between death metallers NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS and BLOODFEAST RITUAL delivers an uncompromising fusion of old-school grit, progressive ferocity and cinematic horror. These 2 acts have converged to push the limits of modern death metal, with influences ranging from the haunting melodicism of BLOOD INCANTATION to the technical fury of AT THE GATES. The result is an album that is as diverse as it is cohesive. Their goal is pretty simple: Brutal and unforgettable.
BLOODFEAST RITUAL are from Los Angeles, and formed in 2019. They are more progressive, but the old school aggression is also there. They are the first band out here. It sounds heavy and technical, but at the same time brutal. Their last track, "The Music Of Eric Zahn", was totally useless though, and has nothing to do with what they usually play.
NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS hailing from Chicago, and formed in 2022. They has released as much as 5 EPs in just 2 years. They are more old school and melodic, and much better according to me. This band is worth checking out.

APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA: A Plague Upon Thee

Despotz Records - 2LP, CD, Digital
APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA formed in 2013 in Gävle, Sweden, and released their debut album, "The End Is Nigh", in 2017. But it's not until now that they return with their second album.
This group blends medieval melodies with the crushing power of doom metal, creating an epic and atmospheric soundscape that transports listeners to a distant past. They mix traditional folk instruments, such as the hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes and mandolas, with heavy, distorted guitars and thunderous drums. And when it comes to the lyrics, you can expect history, mythology and existential themes.
With this new album, they unearth new stories from the past, with tales of walled in zealots, religion and science in medieval times, and the ransacking of hell. And this is a dark and heavy experience to listen to. But once you have started, it's actually not so bad. The songs are very long though, between 7 to 9 minutes, and honestly, the variation isn't always the greatest (it's a bit like cooking different dishes with exactly the same ingredients).

REPLICANT: Hypochondria Of The Machine

Transcending Obscurity Records on Feb. 15 - 7" EP, Digital EP
This New Jersey trio deliver a dark, technical and groovy death metal. If I get it right, these 2 tracks was released digitally 5 years ago, but now they are also available on a 7" vinyl.
Well, this is hardly the old school stuff that most of us like so much, but something far more complicated, but just as brutal and extreme of course. It happens a little too much though, so it's almost chaotic to listen to for me. I would guess that fans of a band like MESHUGGAH could like this, but that's just a wild guess as this is more extreme than they are.
You will get a wild and brutal adventure anyway if you listen to this.

NEPAL DEATH: Polychromatic Route

Nepal Death - Digital Single
The first songs that I heard with this Swedish collective was really good. But after that it has been pretty anonymous songs without single potential. On the other hand, I don't think a band who play psychedelic rock is here to get a hit.
This song is not bad though, and gets better and better for each time I listen, which is very positive. I think it sounds like a mixture of HAWKWIND and The SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES. Very 60s/early 70s. Or "a hypnotic kraut rock odyssey down The Hippie Trail", as they describe it in the press release. You could also see it as a mind-expanding sonic pilgrimage, which captures the chaos and transcendence of a journey beyond the edge of the known world.
As usual they have a couple of guests. This time it's Pontus Torstensson (EXORCIST GBG) on heavy-hitting and trance-inducing drumming, and Dr. Space/Scott Heller (ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE) on cosmic and mind-bending synth explorations.

FRACTURED INSANITY: Age Of Manipulation

Xtreem Music on Feb. 18 - CD, Digital
Belgian death metallers FRACTURED INSANITY celebrates their 20th anniversary, and they also release their fifth album, "Age Of Manipulation". They are described as brutal and creative, and this band is for some reason extra good according to me, and I really like what I hear here. It often goes really fast, and the sound is sharp and vicious. Yes, this is something that you really should check out if you like it fast and brutal, but yet with class.
And I guess there's not much else to add about that..

FINAL SIEGE: Psychological Maceration

Wormholedeath Records - Digital Single
This song is taken from their new album "Nuclear Doom State", which is out now.
FINAL SIEGE are said to be known for delivering brutal, aggressive music, and this is no exception. They combine death, thrash and groove metal just to make you bang your head like a maniac. Do they succeed then? Well, it begins heavy and you think that it will soon go faster, but no. There's a little more action in the chorus, but otherwise this is a really heavy piece. Pretty o.k., but not much else.

BLANKET HILL: Let The Hammer Swing

Blanket Hill - Digital Single
BLANKET HILL were founded in 2015 in Luxembourg, and play a mix of modern hardcore, thrash metal, death metal and old-school heavy metal. Recently they released their second full-length album, entitled "The Ash That Shall Remain", where this song comes from.
This sounds familiar somehow, so they are obviously not so unique. I would say that it's mainly hardcore that I hear in this song, but also some thrash metal. It sounds o.k. It's hard and heavy, as well as aggressive, just like it should be. And I don't really know what else I should say..

MESHUGGAH: Ligature Marks

Reigning Phoenix Music - Digital Single
Many people worship this Swedish veteran band, but I have never really become interested in what they're doing. I saw them live in the late 90s, and it wasn't really my thing. I didn't understand their music at all actually.
But that was many years ago, and now I'm ready to give them another chance. And what I hear is heavy and progressive metal in the harder league. This song might not be as technical as I remember them, and that's probably a good start for me. A pretty o.k. song actually, which was a nice surprise.
"Ligature Marks" is part of the celebration around the reissue of their critically acclaimed 2022 album "Immutable", which is now presented in the remastered "Indelible Edition", which will be released on April 4. And the band is going on a North American tour with special guests CANNIBAL CORPSE and CARCASS between March 28 to April 24.

LÖANSHARK: No Sins To Confess

ROAR on Feb. 21 - LP, CD, Digital
LÖANSHARK hailing from Barcelona, Spain and was founded as a trio in 2017. They are yet another band in the "New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal" scene. And just like all the other bands in that movement, it sounds like something from the 1980s, and especially the first half of the 80s. So if you're weak for that (and who isn't?), then this will make your metal heart beat faster. Because this is absolutely not bad at all. They have succeeded to catch the right sound and have great songs, so there's nothing to complain about here. But not that much to add either. I'm sure that you will have a good time while you listen to this anyway.

FRANTIC AMBER: Jolly Jane

ROAR - Digital Single
Frantic Amber
Swedish all-female melodic death metallers FRANTIC AMBER are back with a new explosive single. It's a taste of their upcoming studio album, "Death Becomes Her". It will be their third studio album, and the release date is April 4.
FRANTIC AMBER started as a project in 2008, and they are from Stockholm. But it wasn't until 2010 that all the pieces began to fall into place and they finally found their sound and the right members.
This little song is a catchy and groovy death metaller, which seems to go in different directions somehow, but find its way back again. Hm.. That might sound like it's a very complicated piece, but it's not so difficult at all. Just listen to it, because you will probably like it.

BONFIRE: Higher Ground

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, LP, Digital
BONFIRE are one of the most seminal German hard rock bands of the past 50 years. They were originally founded as CACUMEN in 1972 by guitarist Hans Ziller in Ingolstadt. In 1986 they rebranded as BONFIRE, and their debut album, "Don't Touch The Light", marked their international breakthrough. They followed it up with "Fireworks" in 1987, which further cemented their status in the hard rock scene. Despite their success, BONFIRE experienced several lineup changes, including the departure of key members. However, Ziller kept the band alive, continuously adapting to the challenges faced by the group. In the 1990s, BONFIRE briefly disbanded, but returned in 1996, with Ziller reclaiming the rights to the band's name (which he lost in the late 90s).
This album might be a new chapter for them, but at the same time not much have changed when it comes to their sound. It's still melodic hard rock in the heavier league that we get, and it still sounds pretty good. So no old fan should be dissapointed, and they should even get some new fans. I don't really know what else I should say, but in case you didn't get it, this is worth checking out.

People Of Punkrock Records on Feb. 13 - Digital Album
BLOODTRUST is a Swedish hardcore/punk band formed in 2020. "Silent Masses" is their second full-length album, where they channeling the frustration and uncertainty of the world with anger and energy. It's mainly hardcore, and they also blend in some metal riffing. The songs are short, around 1:20 to 2:53 minutes, but they don't need to be any longer than that.
Well, this is not bad at all and they seems to know what they are doing. So if you want some hardcore anger, why not give these guys a try?

RESCÜE CAT: Flesh & Weapon

Time To Kill Records on Feb. 14 - MCD, Vinyl EP, Digital
This is the debut EP from this Italian hardcore band, which was founded in Lombardy in early 2023, but they are now hailing from different parts of Italy.
It's not any long songs, about 1 and a half to 2 minutes, so these 8 tracks are over pretty fast. They pay homage to both modern hardcore and the 90s metal tradition, so I guess we can call it metallic hardcore then. It's mainly intense and energetic with both attitude and love, but there's really heavy parts as well. There's fast riffs and blast beats, as well as raw and unfiltered anger. More or less ingredients that you can expect.
This is really good stuff according to me, so maybe you should give them a try?

RANZER is a metal/punk band from Germany formed in 2021, who blend old school heavy and thrash metal with melodic crust punk and d-beat. They attack us with 10 raw and intense tracks, which they combine with anti-fascist lyrics.
The album is released on their own label and recorded in their rehearsal room with their friend and sound technician Tommi G. It's said to catch the raw energy of their live performances, but then it was also recorded live in the studio within 3 days without any overdubs or any tricks. With that in mind, it sounds professional and not as unpolished as I thought it would.
This is said to be of interest for fans of stuff like HELLHAMMER, SODOM and WOLFBRIGADE.

OBSCUREVIOLENCE: Refuting The Flesh

Transcending Obscurity Records on Feb. 14 - MCD, Digital
This is a new band who play a dark, grimy and dissonant form of death/black metal, while keeping it robust and powerful. The band features 2 members of death metallers HORROR GOD. With this group they have brought together elements of the raw, acerbic edge of black metal and the fearsome heft of death metal.
The songs are well balanced and really good compositions. It often goes fast, but not all the time, and it's mainly really raw, but never too extreme.
We only get 6 songs here, and they are 3-4:20 minutes, so according to my calculations this record is just 21 minutes short. So I hope they don't sell this as a full album, but a EP instead.

Martin Rubashov: Elemental

Despotz Records - Digital Single
Swedish singer/songwriter Martin Rubashov (NOLAVÆR) has released the third single from his upcoming album "Origins Of Water", which will be released on March 21.
This time we get a softer but yet energetic song on the border to pop. But it works somehow, as it's not bad at all. I don't really know how to describe it better than that, but it could be worth a try if you're intrested in something different.
"Elemental is about being left in the forest and discovering that even there, you can find answers to many things. It's about returning to yourself", says Martin about this song.

The RIPTIDE RATS: Dunes

The Riptide Rats - Digital Single
Straight out of Kungsbacka, Sweden comes this instrumental surf rock trio, and "Dunes" is their latest single, which is a first taste of an upcoming album (to be released later this year). Their own description of this song is "a nostalgic, old-school western-inspired tribute that's sure to transport you to dusty desert landscapes and get your feet stomping." It's a little softer and laidback, but it sure ain't slow and boring because of that. And I like that it doesn't sound modern at all, but rather like something from the 50s or 60s.
Yes, this is a band that you should listen to.

Finnish hard rockers RYLOS has released the 4th single from their upcoming album, "Signs Of Life", which will be released on February 28, and it will be their fifth album. SLEEP THEORY: Static

Epitaph Records - Digital Single
It begins hard and you think it will be something good even though it's very modern. But unfortunately that doesn't last, and it becomes softer and more emotional/weaker. This is another band who seems to combine nu-metal with modern pop, and that's not such a succeesful recipe according to me. But they seems to be very popular among the kids, so I guess that I'm just to old for this. I have actually heard worse than this though.
SLEEP THEORY are going to release their debut album, "Afterglow", on May 16.

UPPLOPPET, BABY JESUS and DEATH BEAT

Concert at Grill & Gryta in Borås, Sweden on Feb. 8, 2025
BABY JESUS is a local post punk band, and they definitely drew the biggest crowd this night. "The small town syndrome" as I call it when people support the local band and then leave. Weird behaviour and boring attitude as the other bands were much better. But sure, BABY JESUS was o.k. Not much else though. On the other hand, this was the first time I heard them.

BABY JESUS are a true garage rock band from Sweden, and they were really loud. They had that typical 60s sound and did everything right, except for too much reverb then. The DEVILS: Lonely For You Baby

Go Down Records/Cleopatra Records - Digital Single
Italian garage rock duo The DEVILS will release a new studio album, "Devil's Got It", on March 14 (March 28 in North America). "Lonely For You Baby" is a first taste of the album.
The DEVILS consist of Gianni Blacula and Erika Switchblade. They celebrate their 10th anniversary this year, and the new album will be their 6th record.
The band embodies the raw essence of rock n roll, a potent brew of sex, sin and sonic savagery. This song is also bluesy and heavy, and it sounds really cool and damn good. In other words very promising for the new album. If you like cool rock, then you should really check out this song.
In support of the new album, The DEVILS have announced a string of European tour dates, mainly in Germany, but there's also dates in Switzerland and 1 in Italy.

CARCOLH: Twilight Of The Mortals

Sleeping Church Records on Feb. 14 - CD, Digital
This is heavy..
CARCOLH is a doom metal band in the old school, hailing from France. Some of the songs are pretty long, 8:42 to 11:43 minutes, while others are around 4 to 6 and a half minutes.
CARCOLH emerged in 2016, and the band features experienced musicians, including members of bands like OYABUN, HEXENJÄGER and DEAD TOYS (if anybody has heard about any of them?). Their debut album, "Rising Sons Of Saturn", was released in 2018, and followed by "The Life And Works Of Death" in 2021.
Now they return with their third album then, which "promises to be their most ambitious and captivating work yet, pushing the boundaries of the genre with crushing riffs, haunting melodies, and a raw, visceral energy", as the press info says. And I'm actually willing to agree with that, because that's exactly what I hear. It sounds really good, so you should really give this a chance.

LAID TO REST was the first band out. A local band which to me sounded like modern melodic death metal. They seemed to know exactly what they were doing, and it was hardly their first performance. Skilled and professional. The songs was not so bad either, and they even played a brand new song. Could be worth a try if you like modern and melodic metal.

Anyway, this is another very professional band, but in a totally different league than the first band. I think I saw SISTER SIN for the first time in the early 2000s sometime, and I saw them many times through the years before they parted ways something like 10-12 years ago. They always deliver a good show with lots of passion, and they seemed to have lots of fun as well. The music is good old heavy metal, somewhere around "Shout At The Devil" by MÖTLEY CRÜE and ACCEPT in the 80s. In other words very good stuff.

WILDNESS: Avenger

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - LP, CD, Digital
Swedish melodic rock band WILDNESS formed in 2014, and "Avenger" is their 4th album. It's said to summarize everything that the band stand for. At the same it's also said that they pay tribute to classic acts like DIO, ACCEPT and Yngwie Malmsteen, but this is much more melodic than those legends. They have made a very strong album anyway, there's no doubt about that. Because this album is full of arena anthems with a touch of the 80s.
So if that sounds interesting to you, then I really think that you should listen to this album.

LABYRINTH: In The Vanishing Echoes Of Goodbye

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - LP, CD, Digital
LABYRINTH is an Italian power metal band, formed in the early 90s and seen as one of the leaders of the "New Wave Of Italian Power Metal". Together with acts like RHAPSODY OF FIRE and LACUNA COIL, they helped the entire Italian metal scene to reach the next level globally. So they have a lot to live up to, you could say.
With this album it's said that the music have become heavier than in the past, but keeping the speedy power metal attitude with unforgettable hooks, epic prog infused metal songs, and some great melodic numbers. It's very professional and sounds very good, so they actually live up to the high expectations.
LABYRINTH seems to take the classic power metal into a new era, with the addition of other elements. It doesn't sound old school, but rather modern and fresh without being plastic and boring.

The FERRYMEN: Iron Will

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - 2LP, CD, Digital
Melodic metal band The FERRYMEN features Swedish guitarist/songwriter/producer Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, Magnus Karlsson's FREE FALL etc), vocalist Ronnie Romero (LORDS OF BLACK, SUNSTORM, RAINBOW etc) and drummer Mike Terrana (RAGE, Axel Rudi Pell etc). An international experiment that has now come to their 4th album, where they combine the classic heavy metal sound with heavier, updated songwriting textures and epic arrangements. For being melodic, it's actually quite powerful. And the songs on this album are absolutely not bad at all. These songs are of a really high quality and something that you would not want to miss.

DIAMOND DOGS & Chris Spedding: Macon Georgia Giants

Wild Kingdom on Feb. 14 - CD, LP, Digital
Diamond Dogs press photo by Pelle Mannerud
This is really rocking!
Most people say that Elvis Presley is the king of rock n roll as he was the most famous of the 50s rock n roll artists. But fact is that Little Richard should be called that instead as he was actually first. And this album is a tribute to him. And for this they have teamed up with British guitar legend Chris Spedding.
Well, they kick ass as usual and the energy is mainly really high. They have simply made an excellent album (again). This is a must-have for all fans of good old rock n roll from the 50s, and there's not much else to say about that.
To support the album, DIAMOND DOGS & Chris Spedding have tours scheduled in the UK in May and the USA in July. And they are also confirmed for the big Azkena Rock Festival in Spain in June. Seems like I never get the chance to see this band live..

SPIDERS: Sharp Objects

Wild Kingdom on Feb. 14 - CD, LP, Digital
Spiders press photo by Max Ljungberg   Live photo by Jimmy Blom   Spiders press photo by Christine Bjork
(Photos by Max Ljungberg, Jimmy Blom and Christine Björk)
Swedish rock band SPIDERS was founded in 2012, and I have a few records with them that I really like, but now it was a few years since I heard them last time.
The new album, "Sharp Objects", was recorded and produced by Swedish legend Chips Kiesby (The HELLACOPTERS, SATOR, The NOMADS etc etc), mixed by Martin "Konie" Ehrencrona (VIAGRA BOYS, FREEDOM, LES BIG BYRD), and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (The HELLACOPTERS, IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC, CULT OF LUNA etc). It's the first album since 2018, but what an album it is! This is without a doubt the best album they have done so far. Not 1 single weak moment!
SPIDERS play a raw kind of rock n roll with much energy, which is rooted in classic stuff from the 70s. But they also blend in stuff from the early 80s, new wave and garage rock. Some songs actually sounds like they actually could have been from that time, so they are obviously doing everything right. Every song seems to have its own influences, so no song is exactly like the other. The songs are often catchy, so don't be surprised if you want to listen again and again.
If you know Swedish, then you should read my interview with bassist Olle Griphammar here, which was done in late January 2025.

LUVGHUL: Godzilla

K&K Records - Digital Double Single
LUVGHUL is a Swedish horror punk band, and I don't really know much else about them.
The title track here sounds like if Swedish action rockers The HELLACOPTERS would have teamed up with The HIVES. In other words a punky garage rocker, which is full of adrenaline and sweat. This is very good!
The second song, "Ronalds Reagans", is a fast and short punk attack. Also pretty good.
Well, these 2 songs sounds very promising, so I would not say no to some more in the near future. You should really check this out if you want some action in your life.

LANDFALL: Wide Open Sky

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, Digital
LANDFALL is a melodic rock/AOR band from Brazil. But they also blend in influences like DOKKEN, WHITE LION and EXTREME. These new songs are said to be stronger, and I would guess that this works for both fans of AOR and melodic hard rock, because I can hear both here. And it sounds really good, no doubt about that. This makes me think of early BON JOVI for example, even if it's not exactly the same thing (but something similar at least). So if you like them, then maybe you should check out this band.
Anything to complain about then? No, I don't think so..

The DARKNESS: Rock And Roll Party Cowboy

Cooking Vinyl - Digital Single
Hm, I don't know, but this doesn't sound as fantastic as they use to sound. And that's a minus of course. I would not say that it's bad, and it might grow the more you listen, but they have made better songs than this.
"Rock And Roll Party Cowboy" is taken from their new album, "Dreams On Toast", which will be released on March 28. It's the third single, and they describe it as a mix of ZZ TOP, MOTÖRHEAD and JUDAS PRIEST, which I can't really hear. Not the last 2 anyway, but ZZ TOP can be heard here, and I also think of something less good with AC/DC.
The DARKNESS are going on a UK tour on March 6, which will last until March 29. Many dates are already sold out. There will also be 2 exclusive UK shows in mid-May.

ADMIRE THE GRIM: Resist

Inverse Records - CD, Digital
This is the full-length debut from this Finnish female-fronted melodic death metal band. They formed in 2021, and released a EP, "Rogue Five", in 2022, which was a really strong debut.
It seems like they have been working on this album for 2 years, and it's another really strong record that they have made for us. Fans of bands like ARCH ENEMY, CHILDREN OF BODOM and DARK TRANQUILLITY should definitely check this out, because I'm very sure that you won't be dissapointed. There's not 1 single bad song here. That's how strong this is.
Antti "Hyrde" Hyyrynen of STAM1NA is guest vocalist on the single "Resist".

SPIDERS: Mess With My Emotions

Wild Kingdom - Digital Single
Spiders press photo by Max Ljungberg   Spiders press photo by Christine Bjork
(Photos by Max Ljungberg and Christine Björk)
The wait for the new album with Swedish retro rock band SPIDERS is soon over. But first they have released another single, which is the final taste of what to come before the album, titled "Sharp Objects", finally will be released on February 14.
"Mess With My Emotions" is true to their style with a 70s edge, but also a modern edge somehow. It's electrifying and damn good, and just 1 of many good songs on the new album. You should really check this out.
And if you just happens to know Swedish, then you should also read my interview with bassist Olle Griphammar here, which was done in late January 2025.

SIDEWINDER: March Of The Eternal Heretic

Sidewinder on Feb. 7 - Digital EP
Crossover band SIDEWINDER hailing from Leeds, England. The band was formed by 5 passionate musicians in early 2023. Their shared love for blending genres quickly forged a dynamic and powerful sound, which can be described as a heavy and searing fusion of hardcore, punk and metal.
These 4 tracks are about Starship Troopers, Chaos Space Marines and Gears Of War - So a sci-fi theme. The music is hard and aggressive as both hardcore and thrash metal. It goes fast and the gang choirs from hardcore is there as well.
I think they do this very good. So if you want something angry and really powerful, then you should give these guys a chance.
The title track features a guest appearance by INHUMAN NATURE frontman Christopher Barling.

RAT BOY: Public Warning

Hellcat Records - Digital Single
This is a catchy little bastard that reminds me a lot of RANCID (which I have not heard in a few years now). So if catchy punk rock mixed with elements of ska sounds like a hit to you, then you just have to check this out.
"Public Warning" is an observation of the world of today and feeling confused about what's going on. Something isn't right, and everything seems to be fucked. A desperate anthem in desperate times you could say.
RAT BOY hailing from Essex, UK. They released their third album, "Suburbia Calling", last year, where they blend ska, punk, hip-hop and hardcore.

NEVERTEL: Starting Over

Epitaph Records - Digital Single
This is not rock, this is pop according to me. In other words not my kind of thing at all, as it's also very modern, which is exactly the kind of pop music that I absolutely don't like at all.
Revolver describes them as "modern nu-metal revivalism with trap-pop and shadowy hard rock guitar hooks". Melodies and breakdowns seems to be the melody for this Tampa, Florida band. And when it comes to this little song, they talk about a mixture of metallic riffs, soaring vocals and a synth-wave atmosphere. I can't hear any metal here, but those other ingredients are there anyway.

MAGNOLIA PARK: Cult

Epitaph Records - Digital Single
Orlando, Florida quintet MAGNOLIA PARK plan to release their third album, "VAMP", on April 11, which will be a neo-gothic concept album. To give you an idea of what to expect, they have released "Cult", which is a nu-metal song of the modern and melodic kind, with guttural basslines, djent riffs and hip-hop inspired record scratches. Not total crap, but not so exiting either. But if you're a fan of modern nu-metal, then you could always give this a try.

EREB ALTOR: Hälsingemörker

Hammerheart Records on Feb. 7 - CD, LP, 2LP, Box Set
From the mythical dark forests of Hälsingland in Sweden comes EREB ALTOR. They play epic viking metal with stories from the old days. They blend mythology, majestic riffs and haunting atmospheres. Epic melodies are mixed with elements of folk music. The vocals is both clean and harsh, and the songs are in both English and Swedish.
This is the kind of band that can easily attract the wrong kind of people (nazis), just beacuse they sing about old times and play like they do. But that's hardly the band's fault of course.
Most of these 10 tracks sounds good, so there's not that much to complain about. If you like epic viking metal with a pinch of folk music, then you should really give this band a chance.

DEATH PROTOCOL: Time Change Truth Does Not

Rottweiler Records - Digital Single
DEATH PROTOCOL is a Southern California based modern thrash metal band, and they are the latest addition to the Rottweiler ranks. Together they are aiming to release the band's first album, "Demonic Onslaught", this summer.
But before that they have released this single, which is armed with massive crunching riffs, ironclad power, infectious hooks etc. In other words a true thrash metal attack, even if it's in the heavier league and almost melodic (or however I should describe it?). A o.k. song.

DAYS OF JUPITER: The World Was Never Enough

Reigning Phoenix Music on Feb. 7 - LP, CD, Digital
DAYS OF JUPITER is a Swedish hard rock and metal band. They have been around for over 14 years now, and have more than 20 million streams on Spotify. They blend modern metal and soaring melodies, and showcases a wide variety with a mix of hard-hitting anthems, emotive and powerful tracks, raw and intense songs, as well as a more introspective side.
Yes, it sounds modern, and I have heard something similar a few times before. In general it's not so bad, even though I might not like every moment. What else I should write is a very good question though. But if you like modern hard rock/metal, then you should give these guys a try.

Andy Susemihl: Mihlstones

SM Noise Records on Feb. 7 - CD, Digital
Former U.D.O. and SINNER guitarist Andy Susemihl release a new solo album. After multiple albums with guest musicians such as Peter Baltes (ACCEPT), Francesco Jovino (JORN, U.D.O) and Dennis Ward (MAGNUM), this time Andy decided to go solo all the way, and so he recorded, programmed, produced and mixed the new album all by himself - no other musicians involved.
The music on this album, which must be his 11th, doesn't fit into just 1 genre. They call it "Sophisticated Global Rock", but what we really get is mainly a collection of catchy rock songs and melodic hard rock.
The album have as much as 14 tracks, which is a little too much. But luckily most of the songs sounds really good, so it's still worth listening to.

BLOODSHOT CYCLOPS: Here's Blood In Your Eye

Bloodshot Cyclops - Digital EP
BLOODSHOT CYCLOPS have released their debut, with 5 tracks where they blend thrash, punk, and sarcastic irreverence. It's packed with crushing riffs, relentless energy, and a wicked sense of humor. If a mixture of BLACK SABBATH, SLAYER and STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH sounds like something exiting then this could be something for you, because that's what they say that this is.
The band comes from Charlotte, NC, USA, and is the brainchild of North Carolina metal veterans Jeff Triece and Douglas Canipe, who are joined by guitarist Kevin Hall and drummer Jason Donaldson (METHOD 51).
The first song here, "Bag Of Hammers", is heavier, while the second, "Anxiety Attack", is a short up-tempo song. They continue with "Hippies & Witches", which is a little heavier again. "Local Band" is another up-tempo song, more punk. After that they end the whole thing with a cover of the BEASTIE BOYS classic "Fight For Your Right (To Party)".

BioNKill: They Must Die

BioNKill - CD, Digital
BioNKill are a Portuguese project created on June 6, 2023 and unite the North Bank of the Tagus with the South Bank. Rui Vieira (ARRUDA dos VINHOS) and José "Melkor" Marreiros (AMORA) are the creators of this new thrash metal machine, and what brought them together was the old school thrash metal of the 80s and early 90s. But they are not necessarily stuck in the past, but also look into the future, especially in terms of its message.
The lyrics on this debut album are about contemporary topics and the world we live in, with all its flaws. And I can understand that you can get a lot of subjects to write about there, because too many things are totally wrong today.
Anyway, their music really kicks ass and the songs are great. So this is something that all fans of thrash should give a try.

The BIG DEAL: Electrified

Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, Digital
The BIG DEAL is actually a big deal. They should at least be that for fans of melodic hard rock, as they have many excellent songs among these 12 tracks. And the songs that are not excellent are still so damn good that this is a fanatastic album. Most of them are catchy and melodic hard rock anthems that sounds like something from the mid-80s. And it's almost a little like if ABBA would have teamed up with EUROPE during the mid-80s to play some melodic hard rock. Because they seems to have the same potential for writing really strong songs anyway, and they also have female vocalists and much keyboards in this band. The most intresting in this genre in a long time? Possibly..
"Electrified" is the second album from The BIG DEAL, and it's a suitable title. The band came together in 2020, and their debut album, "First Bite", was released in May 2022.

SAGOSTUND: Jättar Som Haltar

Icons Creating Evil Art - Digital Single
This should work for both kids and adults. The song is long as a fairy tale or a piece of a opera. Well, 10 minutes at least. But then this northern Swedish collective play good old Swedish progg rock/progressive rock, and they sing in Swedish as well. Could possibly be the most interesting in that genre in a very long time. Because this is actually not so bad at all. It's theatrical and sounds like something Swedish from the late 60s/early 70s sometime. So if you prefer that sound, then you should really check this out.
The album "Leva I En Fantasi" will be released on March 21. Could be interesting..

VRÄVARNA

Concert at Grill & Gryta on Feb. 2, 2025
O.k., this was the third time in 1 year that I saw this local anal punk band (yes, more or less all their songs is about the ass, both human and animal). But it was free entrance this time and nothing else to do, so why not? They are funny and have good songs, even if they played a little too many new songs according to me. But I can on the other hand understand that you don't want to play the same old songs all the time.
I don't have that much else to say, so here's some photos..

THUNDERMOTHER: Dirty & Divine

AFM Records on Feb. 7 - LP, CD, Digital
Thundermother press photo
Swedish hard rockers THUNDERMOTHER have been around for 15 years in various forms. It's 2 years since their last album, "Black & Gold", was released. And things have changed since then. Suddenly 3 members left founder and guitarist Filippa Nässil (which wasn't the first time by the way), so she had to find new members (again) for the band. So frontwoman Linnea Vikström Egg and drummer Joan Massing was recruited, and former member and bassist Majsan Lindberg came back.
The music has not changed much on this 6th album though, and thanks for that. It's energetic hard rock with elements of both rock n roll and blues. Don't expect to hear any modern influences here, because this is most of all the good old stuff. It might not be as much AC/DC as it was on their earlier albums, but it's still damn good and riff-based, possibly more melodies though.
Absolutely an album that you should check out.
And also check out a quick review with Filippa that I did in late January. You can find it here.

SABER: Lost In Flames / Without Warning (re-issue)

ROAR on Feb. 7 - CD, LP, Digital / CD, LP, Digital
SABER is a band from Los Angeles, who is part of what is called "the new wawe of traditional heavy metal". "Lost In Flames" is the second and latest album, and "Without Warning" is their debut album from 2021, which is now being re-released on the same date as the new album is released.
The band emerged in 2018 and play as so many others a 80s inspired kind of heavy metal, but also add a pinch of sleaze rock to their electrifying drink. Both these albums are really good stuff, and absolutely worth checking out if you like your heavy metal the good old way. And there's actually not much else to add there, as you probably know the sound already.
